Mc Donald's not welcome in U.A.E. ?

"LONDON - Prince Charles suggested Tuesday on a visit to the United Arab Emirates that banning McDonald's fast food was crucial for improving people's diets, a British news agency reported.

Charles made the comments while visiting the Imperial College London Diabetes Center in Abu Dhabi for the launch of a public health campaign, The Press Association reported.

"Have you got anywhere with McDonald's? Have you tried getting it banned? That's the key," Charles was quoted as asking one of the center's nutritionists.

A McDonald's spokesman, Nick Hindle, called the remark disappointing. He said other members of the royal family "have probably got a more up-to-date picture of us," alluding to reports that Charles' son, Prince Harry, was spotted eating a chicken burger at McDonald's in 2005."

UAE releases cancer vaccine

The UAE is the first country in the Middle East to release the HPV (Human Papilloma virus) vaccination “Gardasil” according to Dubai Health News. It protects against the two strains of HPV that are responsible for approximately 70% of Cervical cancer cases in women. According to UAE’s Cancer Registry Program, the annual average of the reported cervical cancer cases has tripled in 2005 when compared with that from 1998-2004.

Gardasil has come under attack in the USA as religious and parent groups resist mandated vaccinations of young girls. Meanwhile, in Australia where the vaccine was developed, the government is planning on spending over $436 million on programmes to vaccinate young girls with an ongoing cost of under $50 million per year.

The UAE’s Ministry of Health has approved the vaccine and it is available now, though no government subsidies are offered. The treatment consists of 3 injections over a 6 month period with a total cost of approximately 1860 dirhams and is available through most GP's and medical centres.

Hosni no Likey Free Speechy

GULF NEWS reported yesterday that an Egyptian Blogger was tossed in jail for calling Hosni Mubarak a "dictator."

Personally, if it were me I would have removed the "tator" syllable -- but then again -- I'm not particularly known for my social graces...

"
A Ferrari theme park? This sounds rather naff...
We've already seen Ferrari's licensing skills produce a range of merchandise from sunglasses to laptops - and now it's taking on Disneyland with the prancing horse's very own theme park. The doors will open in 2009 in Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates, and CAR Online has obtained the architect's drawings revealing the plans for the first time.A large slice of desert on the island of Yas will be reclaimed to host the development, which will include 24 attractions, including a 70-metre high G-Force Tower and what's claimed to be the world's first F1-branded twin rollercoaster ride, allowing races between carriages.Budding Schumachers can try their hand at go-karting and dune buggy racing - and there are bound to be plenty of opportunities to snaffle up Ferrari-branded goodies, too. The plans by Benoy Architects even reveal plans for the Ferrari F1 pitlane experience"

Places of Worship

Islam is the official religion in the UAE. Around 16 per cent of the local population is Shi'a Muslim and the remainder Sunni Muslims. While Dubai is the most multicultural and therefore most tolerant of the emirates and other religions are respected, it is still a Muslim state. The faithful congregate five times a day to pray and you will hear the call to prayer being sung from local mosques all over Dubai.Tourists need to be extra sensitive if they are visiting during Ramadan, the ninth month of the Muslim calendar, when Muslims fast during daylight hours to fulfil the fourth pillar of Islam. Ramadan last approximately one month but the time of year varies each year as it is determined by the lunar calendar (the dates move forward by approximately 11 days each year).Owing to its relative tolerance, Dubai has a variety of Chritian churches and Hindu temples, listed below.

Fuel stationsAt the time of writing, the cost of petrol was Dhs4.75 a gallon; so you should expect to pay less than Dhs60 to fill your tank. There are 24-hour petrol stations on all major highways. Most petrol stations also have convenience stores selling snacks and drinks.

ParkingMany areas in the city centre have introduced paid parking in a bid to reduce congestion. Prices are reasonable (Dhs1 or Dhs2 for a one-hour stay, depending on location), but this hasn’t made it easier to secure a parking space. Paid parking areas are operational at peak times (generally from 8am to noon and 4pm to 9pm), and it’s free to park there outside of these hours and on Fridays or public holidays. If you park illegally or go over your time limit, the penalty charge is Dhs150, increasing to Dhs165 if you don’t pay within 14 days. Generally your car hire company will pay them for you and charge them to you at the end of your lease.Particular black spots include the warren of streets in ‘old’ Bur Dubai, the stretch of Sheikh Zayed Road between the Crowne Plaza and Shangri La hotels and most of Deira.Parking in shopping malls is free, but if you visit any of them on a Thursday or Friday evening expect huge queues and delays, particularly at the City Centre mall. Most hotels have extensive parking facilities for visitors, including valet services.
Road signs Road signs are in both English and Arabic, which makes matters easier for the Western visitor, but the sheer scale of the American-style highway system (up to five lanes on either side at some points) means you have to stay alert, especially at the junctions on Sheikh Zayed Road that have multiple exits.
